1. Parliament passed Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2019

The India Medical Council (Amendment) Bill of 2019, passed by the Parliament this week, allows the central government to take over the Medical Council of India (MCI) - an elected body of medical doctors which regulates medical education and practices in India - for a period of two years. It replaces the second ordinance promulgated for this purpose in January this year. This is a continuation of an ad hoc process to clean up the regulatory body that began in 2010. Twice did the government try to replace the MCI with a new regulatory body - first with the National Council of Human Resources in Health (NCHRH) in 2011 and then with the National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2017 - but both attempts did not materialize.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Varanasi, UP

After a resounding victory in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at his parliamentary constituency Varanasi today to thank the people for bestowing their faith in him. This is the PM's first visit to his constituency after his win by a huge margin of 4.79 lakh votes in the General Elections. The Prime Minister visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and offered his prayers on Monday morning. It will be followed by a meeting with BJP workers.

3. The 3rd edition of International Sunflower Seed and Oil Conference(ISSOC) 2019 will be held in Mumbai

After China and Ukraine, India will host 3rd International Sunflower Seed and Oil Conference (ISSOC) 2019 on July 19 and 20 in Mumbai. The conference, hosted by Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA), will see participation from global industry leaders, experts, researchers, and government representatives. Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is likely to be the Chief Guest and Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, will preside over the Inaugural Function. Over 300 delegates from across the world with interests in sunflower seed, oil and meal are expected to attend this conference in Mumbai. A large group of members of CIARA, Argentina headed by H.E. Dr. Luis Miguel Etchevehere, Agriculture Secretary (Minister), Government of Argentina, will also participate.

4. Pink City Jaipur declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO

The Walled City of Jaipur, known for its iconic architectural legacy and vibrant culture, Saturday made its entry into the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. "Just inscribed as @UNESCO #WorldHeritage Site: Jaipur City in Rajasthan, #India. Bravo," UNESCO tweeted Saturday afternoon. The announcement was made after the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, underway at Baku (Azerbaijan) from June 30 to July 10, examined the nomination of the Walled City of Jaipur for inclusion in the World Heritage list.

5. IMF’s Christine Lagarde, the ‘rock star’ of international finance to become first female ECB president

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde will become the European Central Bank's next president in November. If she replaces Italy's Mario Draghi, a huge change in the eurozone lender's policy seems unlikely. Following several rounds of horse-trading in Brussels, EU leaders nominated France's Christine Lagarde to replace Mario Draghi as president of the European Central Bank. The decision put Germany's more hawkish Bundesbank president, Jens Weidmann, out of the running.

6. EU leaders nominate Germany’s von der Leyen to lead EU Commission

EU leaders have put forward their nominations for the bloc's top jobs, with a woman for the first time proposed as European Commission chief. The surprise choice of German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen to replace Jean-Claude Juncker came after the main front-runners were rejected. IMF chief Christine Lagarde has been nominated as the first woman to head the European Central Bank (ECB).

7. YES Bank acquires 9.47% stake in Eveready Industries by invoking pledged shares

Private sector lender Yes Bank Thursday said it has acquired over 9% shares of battery maker Eveready by invoking pledged shares following loan default by a group company. "Yes Bank, pursuant to invocation of pledge of shares, acquired 68,80,149 equity shares... constituting 9.47% of the post-issue paid-up share capital as at July 3, 2019, of Eveready Industries India Ltd," Yes Bank said in a regulatory filing.

8. Army & NeGD signed MoU to develop revamped app

The Army and the National eGovernance Division Friday inked a pact for developing a revamped application to maintain the centralized database for personnel, equipment and major stores to provide management-related information to the force, a statement said. The National eGovernance Division is a part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

9. A 10-year old Karate Girl, Arinjeeta Dey wins a silver medal for India in World Youth Cup 2019

Arinjeeta Dey, a 10-year-old girl, has won a silver medal in the World Youth Cup. The tournament was organised by World Karate Federation affiliated to the International Olympic Association. Arinjeeta won the medal in the under-12 age group category. She hails from Barasat in West Bengal. She has been a student of Hanshi Premjit Sen, who is the president of Premjit Sen Martial Art Academy in West Bengal.
