NASA to pay USD 4.6 bn to buy 6 spacecraft for Artemis moon missions

NASA has partnered and contracted American global aerospace company Lockheed Martin to develop minimum six and as many as 12 spacecraft for its Artemis lunar exploration programme.


About the contract:

NASA has designated a total of around USD 4.6 billion for six spacecraft. For the first three vehicles, the deals have been closed with $2.7 billion. An additional $1.9 billion for another three in the 2022 fiscal year. It is suspected that NASA may eventually order another 6 Orion capsules for its Artemis moon missions by 30 September 2030.

Artemis programme:

NASA's Artemis programme aims to land American astronauts on the Moon by 2024. The programme goals to land the first woman and the next man. The mission aims to lay the foundation for private companies to build a lunar economy, and eventually sending humans to Mars.
