Twenty two scientists received 2018 National Geoscience Awards

Twenty-two scientists were awarded the National Geoscience Awards for the year 2018. They were awarded for their outstanding contributions in the field of geosciences, mining, and allied areas. The award was conferred by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines, Shri Pralhad Joshi.


Aim of the award:

The award aims to strengthen the synergy between the professional and academic institutions working in the field of geoscience.

Award categories:

The National Geoscience Awards 2018 were given in three categories namely:
1) National Geoscience Award for Excellence
2) National Geoscience Awards
3) Young Scientist Award
National Geoscience Awards includes areas like Groundwater exploration, Mineral exploration, Mineral beneficiation, Mining technology, Basic and applied geosciences, Sustainable mineral development, Geo-environmental studies Natural hazards investigation.

The Award for Excellence was conferred to Prof. Syed Wajih Ahmad Naqvi, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for his significant global contributions in the field of aquatic biogeochemical research.
The Young Scientist Award-2018 was received by Dr. Sohini Ganguly, Goa University. She was awarded for her significant work in the fields of petrology, volcanology, and geochemistry.

About National Geoscience Awards:

The annual award was instituted by the Ministry of Mines in 1966. The awards are an incentive of the Ministry to encourage geoscientists for striving towards excellence. The award recognizes contributions in the field of fundamental or applied geosciences, mining, and allied areas.
