The 15th Finance Commission holds first meeting with the Sikkim govt

The 15th Finance Commission held a meeting with the Government of Sikkim. The commission headed by Chairman, Shri N.K. Singh along with its Members and senior officials held talks with the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, along with his Cabinet colleagues and senior State Government officials.


About the meeting:

The meeting aimed at the welfare of the Sikkim State. It also discussed in detail all the State specific queries raised by the Chairman and Members. The State has demanded Rs.71623.97 crore to the 15th Finance Commission.

The Commission met the representatives of all the political parties in the State including Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) , Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee, Sikkim Democratic Front and Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.

Commission's observation:

The commission observed that Sikkim has good potential in tourism, organic farming, and horticulture. It may establish more cold storages, value chains and develop food processing industries. Sikkim was the first state to be declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) in India. Also, Sikkim has the second-highest per capita income and low BPL population.
