MDL handed 2nd Scorpene submarine Khanderi to the Indian Navy
Mumbai's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) handed over India's second Scorpene submarine Khanderi to the Indian Navy. The attack submarine was is to be commissioned into the Indian Navy by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 28 September 2019. After commissioning, it will be the 17th submarine of the Indian Navy.
Khanderi:
Khanderi is a Kalvari-class diesel-electric attack submarine. It has been named after a wide-snouted Sawfish. It was designed by French company Naval Group, which was earlier known as DCNS. After commissioning, it will be the 17th submarine of the Indian Navy. Khanderi has the ability to be manned by a crew of eight officers and 35 sailors. It will be able to stay out in the sea for 50 days.
Khanderi has been built With a submerged displacement of 1,775 tonnes. It has the built-in capability to target surface ships and to hunt the enemy submarines which is armed with torpedoes that can be fired from six 21 inch tubes or SM.39 Exocet anti-ship missiles. It is capable to carry 30 anti-ship mines in place of torpedoes and missiles. It has intelligence gathering, mine laying, and area surveillance operations abilities.
Note: The first Khanderi submarine was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 6 December 1968. After its service, it was decommissioned on 18 October 1989.
