Google partners with BSNL to bring public WiFi to villages

The search engine giant Google has signed a partnership agreement with the state-owned operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL). The partnership aims to bring public WiFi to villages in states namely Gujarat, Bihar, and Maharashtra. The agreement will focus on villages that had no Wi-Fi connection previously.


The announcement comes after the 5th edition of Google for India event which took place in New Delhi on 19th September.
In July 2019 Google collaborated with Cisco for its gStation to provide free and high-speed WiFi at public locations across India.

Google's previous launches:
  • Google Assistant supported Vodafone-Idea Phone Line is to be launched. This enables the customers to call a single number free of charge at any time. The customers can also ask for information including sports scores, traffic conditions and weather forecasts
  • Google introduced a project to help the Indian customers who use 2G phones without requiring data or an internet connection
  • Google in partnership with Railtel and Indian Railways launched its Google Station platform in January 2016. It aimed to bring Wi-Fi to 400 train stations. The target was achieved and the partners have also expanded the program to provide Wi-Fi in thousands of public buildings and spaces across India.
