1. New Chairman of estimates committeee: Girish

Girish Bapat, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Pune member of Parliament, has been appointed chairman of the estimates committee.

3. 5th Dharma Dhamma Conference held in Rajgir

The fifth international Dharma-Dhamma conference was inaugurated here on Saturday by Union Minister of State Kiren Rijiju in the presence of Sri Lanka's Home Minister Gamini Jaiwickrama Perera, Bhutan's Home and Culture Minister Lyonpo Sherub Gyeltshen, senior BJP leader Ram Madhav and Juna Akhada's Awadheshananda Giri Ji Maharaj.

4. Israel Successfully test Arrow 3 Missile

Israel successfully conducted a series of tests of the Arrow 3 missile defense system in Alaska, in cooperation with the American Missile Defense Agency (MDA).

Key highlights:
  1. This is the first time the Arrow 3 system managed to interecpt a real missile, one that simulated a ballistic missile. According to the defense ministry, the launches were done in Alaska "to carry out tests of the system's capabilities that can't be done in Israel." 
  2. The Arrow 3 is meant to intercept ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere.
5. Govt to set up National traders Body

The commerce and industry ministry will soon notify the constitution of a National Traders’ Welfare Board that will identify ways to improve access to funds for this unorganised sector and suggest measures to simplify acts and rules applicable to traders.

  1. “The notification for constitution of the board will be issued soon," an official at the ministry said under condition of anonymity.
  2. DIPP will set up the Board, which shall make recommendations on problems and issues faced by small traders.

6. World's smallest monkey fossil found

Some 18 million years ago, a tiny monkey weighing little more than a baseball lived in the Amazon rainforest, the smallest fossil monkey known worldwide. The finding is based on a single tooth, twice the size of a pinhead, which scientists recently uncovered in a river bank in southeastern Peru. The specimen helps bridge a 15-million-year gap in the fossil record for New World monkeys.

7. Air quality measurement system launched

India is tying up with the United States and Finland to develop a pollution-forecast system that will help anticipate particulate matter (PM) levels at least two days in advance and at a greater resolution than what is possible now. The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) will be coordinating this exercise and the plan is to have a system in place by winter.

Key highlights:
  1. The system - called Air Quality Early Warning System - will have an in-built web-based dissemination tools to inform public and enforcement agencies about episodic high pollution events in advance. Such information may be helpful for general public in planning their outdoor activities. 
  2. The system is jointly developed by the scientists of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, Noida and India Meteorological Department (IMD). 
  3. The initiative - Innovationfor clean Air (IfCA) will identify innovations having potential to improve air quality.
8. Dr. Vinayat felicitated with an Award

Dr Vinayak S. Hiremath, known for his exemplary work in the field of medicine and is the youngest doctor of Gulbarga, has been felicitated with the ‘Pride of the Nation Award’. Dr Vinayak S Hiremath is presently working as the Chief Consultant Physician Diabetologist and Intensivist at KMK Hospital, Cochin, Kerala.

  1. Dr Vinayak S Hiremath, aged 30, is the first Indian doctor to offer free insulin consultation and treatment to gestational (pregnancy) diabetic mothers and family members of the Indian Army.
  2. Apart from giving free consultation, Dr Vinayak also organizes free camps at least once a month in various rural areas and consults patients regarding diabetes, hypertensive, thyroid, spirometry and other lifestyle diseases. 
  3. During his free time, he is also involved in various philanthropic activities like conducting plantation drive and creating awareness about environmental issues.
9. NASA satellite discovers first super Earth

Washington: Scientists have characterized the first potentially habitable world outside our own solar system located about 31 light-years away.
