1. Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal launched 12th Edition of the Global Innovation Index for the year 2019

The event was co-hosted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). It was for the first time that the GII was launched in an emerging economy. They are published annually by Cornell University, INSEAD (Institut EuropĂ©en d’Administration des Affaires) and the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and GII Knowledge Partners.

2. State wise target to install solar rooftop Systems by 2022

The central government has urged all the states for rooftop solar systems installation by 2022 in order to achieve its 40,000 MW (40GW) target. In-charge for this grid connected solar program will be The Solar Energy Corporation of India(SECI), The state distribution companies(discom)  and the state nodal agencies.

3. International shark meet to be held in Kochi, Kerala at CMFRI

Eminent researchers from across the globe working on shark trade and representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations will meet here this week to discuss the priorities in monitoring shark and ray fisheries, trade and market chain assessment. The four-day international panel discussion is being organised at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) here from Wednesday. A CMFRI release said the global event is jointly organized by the institute and the FAO under the collaborative research project of the two entities on sharks and rays non-fin commodities.

4. IMF lowers India’s growth forecast for 2019-20 to 7% from 7.3%

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has cut India’s growth forecast for 2019-20 to 7% from its forecast in April of 7.3% on poor demand conditions, it said on Tuesday. The IMF’s World Economic Outlook July update also cut India’s growth forecast in 2020-21 to 7.2% from the previous estimate of 7.5%. “India’s economy is set to grow at 7% in 2019, picking up to 7.2% in 2020,” the report said. “The downward revision of 0.3 percentage points for both years reflects a weaker-than-expected outlook for domestic demand.”

5. RBI launches a medium-term strategy framework “Utkarsh 2022”

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on Tuesday launched Utkarsh 2022, the central banks' medium- term strategy framework, in line with evolving macro-economic environment, said an official release. The framework has been launched to achieve excellence in the performance of RBI's mandates and strengthening the trust of citizens and other institutions. The Reserve Bank of India said its management attaches high importance to ' Utkarsh 2022' and will periodically monitor its implementation and progress through a sub-committee of the Central Board.

6. Chetak helicopters by HAL delivered to the Indian Navy ahead of schedule.

HAL entered into a contract with the Indian Navy in August 2017 for the supply of eight Chetak helicopters with the delivery schedule of the first two in August 2019 and the rest in August 2020. HAL delivered a Chetak helicopter ahead of schedule to Indian Navy. The documents were handed over by S Anbuvelan, General Manager of Helicopter Division-HAL to Commodore Vikram Menon, VSM, CSO(Air), HQNA at an event held at HAL facilities today. These helicopters are fitted with latest communication and navigation systems developed by HAL and the company is committed to providing continuous support to the Chetak fleet, said R Madhavan, CMD-HAL.

7. Project compliance lab launched by Wipro in Hyderabad

IT major WiproNSE -0.25 % on Wednesday announced the launch of a global digital product compliance lab in Hyderabad with international standards for reliability, safety and security for customers across industries. The 10,000 square feet lab will serve customers in automotive, defence, consumer electronics, aerospace, telecom, medical, energy and manufacturing, the company said in a statement. It will be a part of Tarang Labs, Wipro's independent product qualification and compliance laboratory with testing capabilities for electromagnetic compatibility, safety, environment, wi-fi, bluetooth, shock and vibration, noise, material, calibration and medical devices.

8. Mohun Bagan Ratna Award 2019 to be conferred to Keshav Dutt & Prasun  Banerjee

Two-time Olympic gold medal winning hockey player Keshav Dutt and former India football captain Prasun Banerjee will get this year’s Mohun Bagan Ratna Award, the club said in a press release here on Monday. Dutt, 93, who played as a half-back, was part of the National hockey team that won gold medals – in 1948 (London) and 1952 (Helsinki) – after India’s Independence. The 64-year-old Banerjee, who is the younger brother of iconic footballer P.K. Banerjee, was a prominent midfielder of his times. He played in three Asian Games in 1974, 1978 and 1982. He was part of an Asian All Star XI team.

9. “JATAN”, a Virtual Museum software for Digitization of Archaeological Museum

The National Portal and Digital Repository for Indian Museums is developed and hosted by Human Centres Design and Computing Group, C-DAC, Pune, as per the agreement with Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Human Centres Design and Computing Group, being a technical expertise, developed JATAN: Virtual Museum software which is used for creating the digital collections in various museums and digital archival tools that are used in background for managing the National Portal and Digital Repository for Indian Museums.

10. ISRO to launch India’s 1st solar mission Aditya-L1 in the first half of 2020

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) now has it's eyes on the Sun with solar mission Aditya-L1 in the pipeline. ISRO has planned to launch the mission during the first half of 2020. Aditya-L1 is meant to observe the Sun’s corona. It will image and study the sun from the First Lagrange point also known as L1 Lagrange point. L1 point is 1.5 million kilometres away from the Earth. It is a point where the gravitational forces of the Earth and the Sun cancel out allowing the spacecraft to hover.

11. Bangladesh develops an alternative for plastic from jute- “Sonali”

As countries around the world try to cut down on throwaway plastic shopping bags, Bangladesh is hoping to cash in on an alternative: plastic-like bags made from jute, the plant fibre used to produce burlap bags. Bangladesh is the world's second biggest producer of jute after India, though the so-called "golden fibre" - named for its colour and its once-high price - has lost its sheen as demand has fallen. Now, however, a Bangladeshi scientist has found a way to turn the fibre into low-cost biodegradable cellulose sheets that can be made into greener throwaway bags that look and feel much like plastic ones.

12. Dejan Papic appointed as India’s table tennis head coach

Veteran Indian table tennis star Sharath Kamal hopes the arrival of new national coach, Dejan Papic, does not affect the existing system in place with just one year left for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Canada's Papic accepted the one-year contract offered by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to coach the Indian team on Tuesday and will join next month. Sharath, who is currently ranked 32 in the world, said the new coach will have to be content with just tweaking things to enhance the players' performance.

13. ICC Test Rankings: Virat Kohli holds on to No 1 spot

India skipper Virat Kohli has retained his number one position in the latest ICC Test batsmen's rankings. Kohli, who last featured in India's 2-1 Test series win over Australia, is sitting on 922 points. New Zealand's Kane Williamson (913) is second and Cheteshwar Pujara (881) third in the rankings released on Monday. In the team rankings, India remains in the first place followed by New Zealand (2) and South Africa (3) with England (4) and Australia (5) rounding up the top five.

14. Overview of Bengal Open Squash Titles 2019

Abhay Singh of Tamil Nadu and Asian Games medallist Tanvi Khanna clinched the men's and women's titles respectively in the sixth Bengal Open squash tournament here on Tuesday. Earlier, the under-15 category witnessed a thrilling battle with fifth seeded Tamil Nadu girl Shameena Riaz upsetting top seed Soniya Bajaj from Maharashtra 9-11 11-7 11-5 7-11 11-8. Daughter of former India hockey captain Mohammed Riaz, Shameena recently won the U-15 title at the Goregaon Sports Club All India Squash Open in Mumbai.

15. Income Tax Department celebrated Aaykar Diwas 2019 on July 24

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and all field offices will be observing and celebrating the 159th Income Tax Day i.e. AaykarDiwas on 24th July, 2019. It was on 24th July, 1860 that Income Tax was introduced for the first time in India by Sir James Wilson to compensate for the losses incurred by the British regime during the first war of independence against British Rule. This is why 24th July is observed as the Income Tax Day.
